You must register for the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) energy efficient scheme if your organisation meets the qualification criteria.
The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is a mandatory emissions trading scheme that aims to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions through energy efficiency. If your organisation meets the qualification criteria, you must monitor energy use and purchase allowances for each tonne of CO2 you emit that falls within the scheme.
How to apply
Register online with the CRC registry, hosted by the Environment Agency, if your organisation has:
- one or more settled half-hourly electricity meters
- used at least 6,000 Mega Watt hours of settled half-hourly electricity during the qualification period
The current register dates are:
- qualification period: 1 April 2012 to 31 March 2013
- registration period: 1 April 2013 to 30 September 2013
- footprint year: 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2014
Annual reporting years:
- 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2014
- 1 April 2014 to 31 March 2015
- 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2016
- 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017
- 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2018
- 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019
Exclusions
Emissions from EU ETS Installations and emissions covered by Climate Change Agreements are outside the scope of the revised CRC scheme.
Fees and charges
A one-off registration fee of £950 is payable for all new participants. In addition, participants must pay an annual subsistence charge of £1,290.
Other fees include:
- £285 registration to open a third party (or trading) account
- £390 annual subsistence for third party account holders
- £70 change of representative charge
In Northern Ireland the Chief Inspector of the Department of the Environment (DOE) administers and enforces the scheme while the Environment Agency runs the UK-wide online register.
