Benchmarking of hydraulic river modelling software packages
This project created a set of tests to assess how accurate and capable the software used for modelling the movement of water is, following a series of upgrades.

Details
This project created twelve tests to assess the software used by the Environment Agency to model the movement of water (hydraulic modelling).
The tests measure:
- what the software can do
- how accurate its models are
- whether the models produced can be reproduced by other means
The software packages used were last benchmarked in 1997 and have been updated numerous times since then, while the range of software used has been reduced.
The tests include data sets and results, and can be refined and added to in the future. They’re intended to be an additional tool for Defra, the Environment Agency and other Operating Authority staff, research contractors, consultants, academics and students to assess river modelling software packages against established best practice.
This project started in 2002 and was completed in 2004.
