Background

Broad Scale Modelling focuses on trying to model entire systems in order to find the answers to important questions about flood risk. In June 1999, the Advisory Committee for Flood and Coastal Defence R&D identified the need to establish prediction tools that take into account the complex interactions between different physical processes and their feedback effects. This included the ecological, biological and socio-economics effects. These tools could be used to inform policies about managing floods, and the way decisions are made about flood risk.

Outcome

This study established the existing and future requirements for the research needed to develop Broad scale Ecosystem Impact Modelling (BSEIM) tools. Simulating changes to geography and morphology requires a long-term programme of research examining the changes to ecosystems caused by human actions and climate change. The tools will need to be able to predict changes in systems relating to water and its:

  • movement
  • geography
  • morphology
  • ecological systems

This project ran from 2001 to 2002, at a cost of £46,180 .
