Objectives

This research aimed to improve how changes in the shape of estuaries can be predicted by modelling how waves and currents, living organisms and sediment interact. This causes sediment to build up or be eroded in different places. It builds on the work done during Phase 1 of the Estuaries Research Programme.

Approach

This research focuses on specific problems where these three main factors interact with each other (hydrobiosedimentary processes). Large multidisciplinary datasets are already available for some estuaries, such as the Humber. These are used to exchange knowledge and data to understand the interconnections between the different processes.

Outcome

This research improves existing predictive algorithms used by estuary modellers and generates new algorithms covering a wider range of parameters.

This project ran from 2001 to 2004 at a cost of £804,947.
