This project consisted of liaising with and advising on research being carried out to generate a spatially consistent rainfall time series (FD0404).

This supervisory project:

  • advised on what was required from spatially consistent rainfall modelling
  • produced a draft specification for the research
  • evaluated the bids received
  • commented on the research

Background

The rainfall simulations provided by ‘FD0404 - 2001 - Continuous simulation modelling for flood estimation’ feed into a collection of projects that aim to develop a more accurate approach to estimating floods. These will be used as inputs to hydrological models to generate synthetic flow time series over periods longer than those we have recorded. These model outputs will provide better understanding of how often floods might occur at modelled sites, which may include sites without gauged flows.

Outcome

The results of this project will be used by operating authorities and consultants involved in designing flood defences.

This project ran from 1995 to 2000 at a cost of £31,000.
