This research evaluates the options to increase the operational efficiency of Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation (MEICA) asset management. New guidance and a software tool are developed to help engineers find ways of boosting the efficiency of pumping systems that drain land to minimise the risk of flooding.

Approach

Flood defence pumping stations consume significant amounts of energy and small improvements to energy consumption at each site could add up to substantial energy savings. This innovative project provides guidance for local mechanical and electrical managers to increase the efficiency of operations at new, existing and refurbished pumping stations.

This project has adopted a tiered approach that includes a:

  • guidance document outlining key considerations for optimising the efficiency of pumping stations
  • science report presenting the theoretical knowledge behind the guidance information
  • new software tool (in Excel) offering a method of recording site data and comparing the effectiveness of potential changes to the pumping system in terms of energy savings

This project ran from 2009 to 2012.
