Radiation epidemiology
A programme of research to understand the health effects of exposure to ionising radiation.
Epidemiology is the study of the distribution of disease in populations and of the factors that affect this distribution.
UK Health Security Agency’s (UKHSA’s) Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards, manages and undertakes a programme of research to enable it to contribute to the understanding of the health risks of exposure to radiation. The radiation epidemiology programme involves work undertaken within UKHSA as well as vital collaborative work involving partnerships with national and international collaborators.
National registry for radiation workers (NRRW)
An epidemiological study established to examine the risks of protracted and low-dose exposures to ionising radiation among radiation workers in the UK.
Nuclear weapons test participants study (NWTPS)
A long-term follow up study of the health of UK personnel who had been involved in UK atmospheric nuclear weapons tests conducted between 1952 and 1967 in Australia and the South Pacific.
NDA epidemiology research
This programme brings together epidemiological research studies that were initiated by British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL) and the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Agency (UKAEA). These programmes were transferred to the NDA following a reorganisation of the nuclear industry and are currently being managed by UKHSA.
