Applies to England and Northern Ireland

Detail of outcome
We have decided to make one change to other proposed rules and guidance for reformed AS and A level geography qualifications: in response to consultation feedback, we are no longer requiring exam boards to mark all non-exam assessment. We are adopting all of our other proposals.
We have now published final versions of our:
- GCE Subject Level Conditions and Requirements for Geography
- GCE Subject Level Guidance for Geography
Our new rules require:
- all reformed AS and A level geography qualifications to comply with the Department for Education’s AS and A level subject content for geography, and with our assessment objectives
- all reformed geography A levels to include non-exam assessment - an independent investigation involving fieldwork (weighted at 20% of total marks)
- awarding organisations to collect statements from schools which confirm that students have carried out the fieldwork required by the subject content
The non-exam assessment task may be marked by teachers (and moderated by the awarding organisation), or marked by the awarding organisation.
Our guidance explains how awarding organisations should interpret our assessment objectives.
Original consultation
Consultation description
This consultation is about the rules and guidance we plan to put in place for new AS and A levels in geography. These rules will apply to the exam boards that want to offer new geography AS and A levels from September 2016.
This consultation takes forward decisions made following our earlier consultation ‘Developing new GCSE, A level and AS qualifications for first teaching in 2016’, and is part of Ofqual’s work supporting the government’s changes to GCSEs, AS and A levels.
