Detail of outcome

We have made a number of changes in response to consultation feedback.

In line with our decisions for GCSE, we have made changes to the weightings of the assessment objectives in both AS and A level statistics to reduce the risk of assessment predictability. For both AS and A level, we have decided on the following weightings:

AO1 55%
AO2 25%
AO3 20%

We have also made changes to our guidance on assessment objectives to ensure we are as clear as possible about the distinction between AO2 and AO3, and to address specific comments on the detailed wording.

We have adopted our remaining proposals unchanged.

Detail of feedback received

We received four responses to the consultation – three from organisations and one from an individual.

One organisation did not comment directly on our proposals, but instead provided general comments on the process for reform of GCSEs, AS and A levels.

The other respondents all supported our proposals, with one organisation suggesting changes to the wording of our proposed guidance.

Two organisations also commented on issues which were outside the scope of the consultation – in particular the weighting and wording of the assessment objectives.

Consultation description

This consultation is about the rules and guidance we plan to put in place for new AS and A levels in statistics. These rules will apply to the new statistics AS and A levels that will be taught in schools in England from September 2017.

This consultation takes forward decisions made following our earlier consultation ‘Developing new GCSEs, AS and A Levels for first teaching in 2017 - Part 2’, and is part of Ofqual’s work supporting the government’s changes to GCSEs, AS and A levels.
