Impact assessment

Detail of outcome

Part one of the government response outlines the basis of the government’s offer to nursing, midwifery and AHP students, including supplementary funding for travel, dual accommodation and childcare allowances.

To ensure the supply of postgraduate healthcare students, the response also clarifies their funding situation. We believe these proposals to be essential to ensuring the success of the reforms, particularly on issues of keeping healthcare courses accessible to all.

The second part of the consultation response will include an updated impact assessment and equalities impact assessment and will be published in the autumn.

The consultation received about 1,750 responses.

Consultation description

The government has proposed that from 1 August 2017, all new nursing, midwifery and allied health professional students on pre-registration undergraduate and post-graduate courses will receive their tuition funding and financial support through the standard student support system, rather than NHS bursaries and tuition funded by Health Education England.

This consultation seeks views on how these reforms can be successfully implemented.

Further guidance about the NHS bursary reforms is available.
