Detail of outcome

The requirement to participate in team sport is a curriculum matter, so we have shared the comments on possible equality issues with the Department for Education to consider further.

Because there were no other issues raised, we have decided to confirm our consultation proposals in full.

Detail of feedback received

There were 4 responses to the consultation, all from organisations. One respondent did not comment directly on our proposals, but instead provided general comments on the process for reform of GCSEs, AS and A levels.

All the other respondents supported our proposed approach, and did not comment on the detailed drafting of our proposed Conditions and guidance.

In response to our questions on the equality impact of our proposals, one respondent raised a concern about requiring students with autism or autism spectrum disorder to participate in team sports/activities.

Consultation description

This consultation is about changes we plan to make to our rules and guidance for new GCSEs in physical education to allow for the new short-course GCSEs. These rules will apply to the new physical education short-course GCSEs that will be taught in schools in England from September 2017.

This consultation takes forward decisions made following our earlier consultation ‘Developing geology, politics and PE short course for 2017 teaching’, and is part of Ofqual’s work supporting the government’s changes to GCSEs, AS and A levels.
