Detail of outcome

Highways Agency previously consulted on proposals to limit speeds to 60mph between 7am and 7pm seven days a week because of the potential effect of the new scheme on local air quality.

This option will not be taken forward and instead Highways Agency are rigorously investigating alternatives while work progresses on the scheme in the next 12-18 months.

Consultation description

Proposals to implement a maximum mandatory 60 mph speed limit on the M1 junctions 28 to 35a in place of the current national speed limit. This aims to ensure that there is no significant adverse impact on local air quality from the M1 junctions 28 to 31 and 32 to 35a “smart motorway” schemes.

The Highways Agency has drafted regulations regarding implementation of this speed limit and are keen for any organisations, businesses or individuals affected by these proposals to provide their views, specifically in how they could affect you, your organisation or those you represent.
