Consultation description

We are proposing to put in place a statutory instrument (SI) to enable the holding of planned stages of the Tour de France cycle race in England in 2014.

The SI will raise the normal maximum imposed on the total number of competitors for a cycle race on the highway. It will also temporarily supersede provisions within existing cycle racing regulations that put restrictions on the design of the route. The SI will be time limited and relevant only to the Tour de France in 2014, and no other races.

A similar SI was put in place in 1994 for Tour de France stages held in England in that year.

This consultation does not affect consideration of the changes proposed to the Cycle Racing on the Highway Regulations (1960) as part of the government’s Red Tape Challenge.
