Press release

Overnight closures on the M6 Junction 10a-13 Smart Motorway improvement in Staffordshire

A number of overnight carriageway closures are taking place this month as part of the ongoing smart motorway upgrade on the M6 Junction 10a-13 near Birmingham.

The closures, which start on Monday, are necessary to allow for resurfacing.

From Monday 9 March to Thursday 19 March and from Monday 23 March to Wednesday 1 April there will be overnight closures of the southbound carriageway between junction 12 at Cannock and junction 10A at Essington.

The closures take place from 10pm to 6am. Traffic will be diverted off the M6 at junction 12 westwards on A5 to the intersection with the A449 at Gailey, then south on A449 to M54 junction 2, then east on M54 to re-join the M6 at junction 10A.

On Friday 20 March and Saturday 21 March there will be overnight closures of the northbound carriageway between junction 12 at Cannock and junction 13 at Acton Trussell.

The closures will take place from 10pm to 6am. Traffic will be diverted off the M6 at junction 12 westwards on A5 to the intersection with the A449 at Gailey, then northwards on A449 to re-join the motorway at junction 13.

Highways Agency project manager David Cooke said:

We are now beginning a programme of resurfacing of all of the carriageways between junctions 10A and 13. To carry that out safely and efficiently we need to close carriageways overnight.

The scheme’s end date has now been extended to Autumn 2015 as we are now delivering a significant amount of additional work within this scheme, including the resurfacing, to ultimately deliver improved benefits to road users. By combining the work now we are reducing the need for maintenance closures in the future, thereby minimising disruption.

We advise motorists to allow at least an extra 45 minutes for their journeys when travelling along this section of the road.

The £102m smart motorway investment will make journey times more reliable and reduce congestion by improving traffic flow using mandatory variable speed limits and giving road users more capacity on the motorway by using the hard shoulder as a permanent additional running lane.
