Scottish cities to get free public wifi
Public buildings across Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Perth will be transformed into free wifi hotspots, it was announced today.
Community centres, libraries, museums and sporting complexes in Scotland’s capital, the Granite City and the Fair City will be among 1000 public buildings in cities across the UK to become wifi hotspots.
This rollout is part of the UK Government’s £150 million investment programme to transform the digital capability of UK cities and will make them even more attractive places to live, do business, visit and invest in.
Over the coming months, public buildings around the UK will begin to offer free wifi – some have already gone live, and the remainder are all on track to be up and running as soon as March 2015.
Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael said:
Whether you live in one of our major cities or in one of our most remote communities, the UK Government is working to ensure that Scotland is at the heart of the UK’s digital transformation.
Wifi is a prime example of cutting edge technology that has increasingly become an essential part of everyday life. Today’s announcement brings this transformation into the heart of Scottish cities and some of the country’s most recognisable locations.
This announcement together with our on-going work to bring superfast broadband to rural locations across the country represent substantial investment by the UK Government and is great news for Scottish businesses, families and communities.
