Secretary of State for Scotland comment on the MOD Army basing plan
The Ministry of Defence announced details of the investment in new bases and accommodation today as part of the Regular army basing plan.
The Secretary of State for Scotland Michael Moore said:
“Today’s announcement reflects the reality of the changing shape of the Army across the UK while creating clarity and stability for the defence footprint in Scotland. We are seeing £100m of investment in military infrastructure and hundreds of additional soldiers coming to Scottish Army bases, bringing the total number to 4,000. It shows a deep commitment to Scotland as an integral part of our country’s defence and should be welcomed.
“Those who criticise the decision today should not do so without offering a fully-costed and detailed plan of exactly how these figures would change if Scotland was no longer part of the UK. There has been a great deal of speculation from the Scottish Government on this issue but no hard facts. That is the difference between us: a UK Government which is committed to putting real investment and personnel into Scotland and those who support pro-independence failing to outline a viable alternative.”
