About us
The Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV) is a joint Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and Department for Transport (DfT) unit. Established in 2015, CCAV is an expert policy unit that is working with industry and academia to make everyday journeys safer, greener, more efficient and more inclusive. To do this, CCAV is shaping the safe and secure introduction of self-driving vehicles and services on UK roads and leading the government’s wider Future of Transport programme.
CCAV’s objectives are to:
- Make the movement of people and goods in the UK safer, fairer, greener, and more efficient.
- Set strategic direction and provide investment certainty through policy and other interventions, for example through the Connected and Automated Mobility 2025 paper and the Future of Mobility: Urban Strategy
- Develop and implement the legislative and safety frameworks necessary to enable the safe commercial deployment of self-driving vehicles, including the CAVPASS programme
- provide joint investment with industry through 2025 to overcome the barriers to commercial deployment thereby attracting, de-risking, and anchoring global investment, creating jobs, and strengthening our supply chain so that the UK is a maker of these technologies and services, not just a taker.
- Engage with the public to gain an insight into public opinion and to increase the public’s understanding of emerging technologies.
CCAV uses its unique position to bring together world-class expertise from across the public, private and academic sectors to create a strong, collaborative UK ecosystem delivering safe, innovative, and appropriately regulated technologies and services.. The benefits of this work could include:
- Improved traffic flow and reduced congestion
- Increased productivity through optimised route planning and more productive time in vehicle
- Improved road safety, including reduced number and/or severity of road collisions
- Improved access to transport for people with restricted or limited mobility
- Better access to transport across the country
- Strengthening the UK’s position as a science superpower
- Unlocking new investment in UK companies, creating new jobs and value for the economy.
- Enabling British companies to grow and succeed in the global marketplace.
The work undertaken by CCAV and its partners has already ensured that the UK has a proven track record in leading connected and self-driving vehicle innovation, enabling joint public and private investment of £440 million. An additional £100 million of public funding has recently been made available to support the commercial deployment of connected and self-driving vehicles, and to fund research and development of safety and cyber security assurance processes to ensure these vehicles are safe and cyber resilient. This work will help to unlock the future UK market, which is estimated to be worth as much as £42 billion by 2035, and could create as many as 38,000 jobs in the sector.
