Working for CNC

The recruitment process, workplace benefits, and types of roles at the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC).

How to apply

You can find a list of current job opportunities on our recruitment website.

The high security nature of our work means we have a thorough application process which can take some time, however we aim to have you in post in between five to eight months from your first application.

You can find out more about the application process on our recruitment site.

Roles at the CNC

We recruit staff to work in operations support, IT and communications, finance, HR and training roles. They support the work done by our police officers.

The police officers we recruit are constables, sergeants and inspectors. We also look for officers to take on special roles as dog handlers and firearms instructors, as well as candidates to join our Strategic Escort Group or our special branch.

Constables

Constables must first complete a 17-week training course. They then join one of our operational policing units where they’ll help to safeguard the nuclear site they’re assigned to.

Sergeants

A sergeant manages one of our specialist teams or one of our operational policing units. They’re responsible for mentoring their team of police constables and leading them on site patrols and security checks.

Inspectors

Inspectors must have excellent managerial and leadership skills. They lead teams of police sergeants and constables, or a specialist team. Working closely with the divisional commander or chief inspector, they help to make sure important targets are being met.

Dog handlers

A dog handler’s responsibilities include doing patrols, and performing site and off-site checks. Our dog handlers receive comprehensive training and as a result are sometimes asked to help other forces when relevant incidents occur.

Strategic Escort Group

After completing their 2-year probation period, officers can apply to join the Strategic Escort Groups. Members of this group work in our Operational Policing Units when they aren’t required to fulfill their escort duties.

The Strategic Escort Group is a specialist team that provides on-board armed protection for high security nuclear cargo during marine, rail and road transports.

Special branch

Our special branch is responsible for carrying out investigations and gathering intelligence to identify and prevent threats to nuclear facilities. They support the national effort to deter, detect and disrupt terrorist activity.

Firearms instructors

Firearms instructors train and assess CNC officers.

Benefits

Benefits of working with us include:

  • a pension scheme with a fixed employee contribution and an employer contribution
  • the option to exchange a small percentage of your salary for childcare vouchers
  • a 5 day working week of 37.5 hours for police staff
  • opportunities for part-time working and job-sharing
  • 8 public holidays

Medical considerations

We welcome applications from disabled candidates and, where possible, we’ll make adjustments to accommodate those we recruit. However we have a duty of care to our applicants and we must make sure they’re medically, physically and psychologically able to fulfil their duties.

A medical examination isn’t required for most police staff roles. The exceptions include firearms instructors, armourers, kennel assistants and control room operators.

For police office roles, applicants’ health and fitness is thoroughly assessed. Conditions that mean you may be unsuitable for a police officer role include:

  • insulin-dependent diabetes
  • some specific learning difficulties
  • epilepsy
  • eyesight or hearing not meeting the required standards
  • skin conditions
  • respiratory conditions
  • some mental health conditions
  • some types of medication

If you have a medical condition or a specific learning difficulty that you would like to discuss before or during your application you can contact our occupational health team. Email [email protected] or telephone 03303 135401.
