Research at DVSA
We carry out research with our customers and staff to find out how well our services work, so we can make improvements to provide the best service possible.
What we do
Our mission at the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency is to keep Britain moving, safely and sustainably.
To design services that are easy to use and valued by the people who need them, we need to understand their circumstances, influences and expectations.
Research helps us understand what we need to do to design a good user experience, and whether the changes we make improve road safety.
Our current research
Newly-qualified driver research (Driver2020)
We’re working with the Department for Transport and the Transport Research Laboratory to carry out research with people who have recently passed their driving test.
The research is looking at ways of making young drivers safer, more confident and more skilful in their first year of driving.

Mock driving test guidance for driving instructors
We’re carrying out research with driving instructors to find out what guidance should be provided for driving instructors about carrying out mock driving tests.
Driving instructors have been asked to fill in an online survey. Some may also be asked to take part in further research, such as face to face interviews.
Encouraging learner drivers to broaden their experience
We’re carrying out research with driving instructors to find out what techniques they use to prepare learner drivers for their driving test and a lifetime of safe driving. This includes what they do to prepare them for driving on country roads, driving at night and driving independently.
Driving instructors have been asked to fill in an online survey.
Our publications
We publish our research and analysis publications after we’ve completed a piece of research.
We publish statistics about driving tests, instructors and data about testing commercial and private vehicles in Great Britain.
The Department for Transport publishes road accident and safety statistics.
