How our customers travel to our office is important to us. At the Intellectual Property Office, we look to prevent pollution and minimise environmental impacts by encouraging sustainable travel. Sustainable travel means travelling in a way that minimises your negative impact on the planet and wildlife.
We therefore kindly ask our customers to consider environmentally friendly modes of transport, including public transport, walking, cycling, and even lift-sharing, to help reduce CO2 emissions.

Opening times
Christmas & New Year
Our Customer Support Centre (formerly Information Centre) phone lines will be closing at an earlier time of 1pm on Tuesday the 24 December and Tuesday the 31 December 2024. You should not rely on other direct line numbers being answered during this period.
You will still be able to file with us through our website, emailing [email protected] or by post. Please note any forms or documents filed during this period will still receive the appropriate filing date.

Our Customer Support Centre is open Monday to Friday, 9am until 5pm. If you telephone us shortly before 5pm, we will do our best to fully answer your question(s). If your query is likely to take some time beyond 5pm to resolve, we will notify you early in the call and will arrange to call you the next working day during our opening hours at a time to suit you.
Similarly, if you are visiting the office, please allow sufficient time for your visit to enable us to resolve your query by 5pm. We ask that you contact us before visiting. This is so that we can provide you with the best possible service. Many of our staff remain homeworking at present so we request 24 hours’ notice of your visit and ask that you book an appointment with us. You can do this by calling or emailing our Information Centre with the contact details provided above. This will enable us to ensure that members of the appropriate team are onsite to support you.
Weekends and bank holidays
The office is deemed to be closed on weekends, Good Friday, Christmas Day and all England and Wales bank holidays for all types of business, except for the filing of new applications not claiming priority. If documents are filed for these types of business at times when the office is deemed to be closed, they will receive an official filing date of the next working day.
Any official time period which expires on a weekend or any other day on which the office is closed is extended to the next working day.
International and European applications
The Office will receive and process European and International patent and trade mark applications filed directly with us under the Patent Co-operation Treaty, European Patent Convention, Madrid Protocol systems. The hours of business for filing these applications and any associated documents are the same as above for the filing of UK patent and trade mark applications.
