Social media use
Information about MAIB's social media policy and the channels we use.
We use social media to communicate with those who have an interest in maritime safety and the content we post can include:
- newly published material such as investigation reports or safety bulletins
- other safety-related news and blogs published on our website
- information related to new or ongoing investigations, if appropriate
- sharing fresh content across our digital channels
- witness or information requests, when required
- our recruitment campaigns
- news and information from AIB colleagues, DfT or other organisations involved in promoting safety

How we moderate our social media channels
We will delete:
- comments that are abusive, racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise inflammatory
- nuisance comments that we consider to be spam
- personal information such as telephone numbers and address details
- anything that advertises a commercial activity or asks for money
How we connect with other social media users
If you follow us on social media we may follow you back or share your posts, this does not imply endorsement of any kind.
How we share social media messages
We may share content that relates directly to maritime safety, such as awareness campaigns, or has shared goals, for example news from the other AIBs.
This may be either by request or without being asked.
How we respond across all social media channels
We attempt to check in with our social media channels from Monday to Friday during office hours (8.30am to 4pm) but accounts may not always be interactive or regularly monitored. We may, on occasion, schedule social media content to be published outside of working hours.
We accept no responsibility for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or YouTube being unavailable.
We try to review comments but make no commitment to respond to individual messages, whether publicly or privately shared. We cannot engage on issues of party politics or answer questions that break the rules of our general comments policy.
Emerging themes or helpful suggestions may be passed to relevant colleagues, but use the appropriate method of communication detailed below to make an official enquiry. This is vital if you want to report an accident to us.
Reporting a marine accident or incident
Please do not use our social media channels to report an accident to MAIB as your message may be missed. We require notification by the quickest means possible via our dedicated accident reporting line.
