Our Annual Report includes the Committee’s strategic plan. Our purposes are clear: we examine areas of concern about the standards of conduct of public office holders, and promote the highest standards of conduct across public life. To achieve this, we develop well-argued, evidence-based, practical recommendations to help bolster ethical standards.

In 2017-18, we considered issues across public life from MPs’ outside interests to the continuing importance of ethical standards for public service providers. The Committee delivered against its forward plan, and went further by undertaking a six month review into intimidation in public life, with particular reference to the experience of Parliamentary candidates at the 2017 General Election, at the request of the Prime Minister.

The Committee is also currently undertaking a review into local government ethical standards.

The Committee is keeping a watching brief on a number of issues going forward, including Parliament’s response to allegations of a culture of bullying and sexual harassment in Westminster, lobbying and the business appointment rules, and party funding.
