Occasional Paper 106 examines the operation of Triage schemes. Triage schemes are based in police stations and aim to identify the needs of young people as they enter the youth justice system.

A key objective of the schemes is to address offending behaviour by diverting young people who have committed less serious crimes away from the formal youth justice system and into restorative interventions and other services.

The report highlights a number of lessons that can be learnt about the design, implementation and delivery of Triage schemes from the experiences of the seven local areas where the study was carried out. There was insufficient data available from the areas to establish the effectiveness of Triage schemes.
