Baseline design for a 630 place primary school
The design shown is a 2 storey building for 630 pupils, with a 26 place nursery.
Key features of the design are that:
- the building wraps around a central court that leads to the main entrance
- each wing has classrooms on one side of the circulation zone and support spaces on the other
- shared spaces are in a central link block for easy access
- the infant and nursery classrooms are on the ground floor giving direct access to outdoor spaces that face away from the entrance court (the junior classrooms are on the first floor)
- classrooms are arranged according to year group
- toilets for the youngest pupils are directly off the classrooms for better staff supervision
- separate access points around the building ensure there is no congestion at the start and end of the day (nursery pupils can enter directly via their coat storage area and juniors don’t have to pass through the infant suite)
- all classrooms are orthogonal and 7.2 metres deep, providing sufficient daylight without bringing daylight into the back of the ground floor rooms
- schools can choose whether to have 55 metre square junior classrooms and a practical space, or 62 metre square classrooms and no practical space within the same area
- there are 2 halls to accommodate the full range of PE, assembly, dining and performance activities
- services and security are zoned to allow for different uses of the school
- the main reception provides a controlled entry point for visitors with easy access to the halls for after school community events
- air is drawn through the classrooms and extracted across the corridor and support spaces at high level, ensuring good ventilation
