Details

These tables are produced under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR). They reflect the government’s delivery plans, and the OBR’s additional judgments as set out in their economic and fiscal outlook.

The ‘Outturn and forecast: Spring Budget 2020’ tables are consistent with the Spring Budget 2020 Economic and Fiscal Outlook, 11 March 2020.

Data source

Stat-Xplore is an online tool for exploring some of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) main statistics. You can use Stat-Xplore to create your own tables and charts.

The move to publishing benefit data using Stat-Xplore, instead of the DWP Tabulation Tool, has involved adopting a new disclosure control methodology. This is in line with other benefits published using Stat-Xplore. The data still comes from the same source, but there may be small differences in the outputs displayed using the tool when compared to the statistical tables we’ve previously published.

Statistical disclosure control has been applied to the tables to avoid the release of confidential data. This means that totals and cross-references may not sum due to the disclosure control applied.

More information

Figures are in line with DWP Executive Competence unless otherwise stated.

Historic expenditure figures may differ from those published in the accounts due to differing definitions and the inclusion of data that has become available since.

Historic caseload data comes from statistical reports. It may differ from previously published figures because these tables provide estimates for financial years, rather than point-in-time figures.

Some historical data may differ from that previously published where:

  • new information has become available
  • methods for estimating expenditure have been improved

Forecasts are made using a number of techniques appropriate to the particular benefits, taking into account demographic, economic, social and policy factors.

Updates to this page

Published 20 March 2020
Last updated 19 November 2021 + show all updates
  1. Published a revised version of the Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit expenditure by local authority 2019/20 data tables. An error was identified in the data for 2019/2020 that affected the Other Local Authority Accommodation and the Temporary Accommodation tenure types for Scotland. The mistake has been fixed and the correct figures published. Note, this only affected the Housing Benefit by local authority figures for 2019/20, the data for other years has not changed.

  2. Published a revised version of the 'Outturn and forecast: Autumn 2020' data tables. The sum formula in row 19 on the ‘UK welfare’ tab of the spreadsheet incorrectly included rows 14 and 16. This meant the numbers in these rows were double counted. These have been corrected in the revised version. Also included in the ‘UK Welfare' and 'GB Welfare' spreadsheet tabs are breakdowns of benefit expenditure covered by Departmental Expenditure Limit and local authorities.

  3. Added ‘Outturn and forecast: Autumn Budget 2020’ tables in ODS and XLS formats.

  4. Added the following data tables: 'Benefit expenditure by country and region, 1996/97 to 2019/20', 'Benefit expenditure by local authority, 2002/03 to 2019/20', 'Benefit expenditure by Parliamentary constituency, 2010/11 to 2019/20', 'DLA expenditure by reported medical condition and rate paid, 2002/03 to 2019/20', 'PIP expenditure by reported medical condition, 2013/14 to 2019/20', 'Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit expenditure by local authority, 1996/97 to 2019/20', 'State Pension expenditure by country of residence, 1995/96 to 2019/20' and 'Gross benefit expenditure by month, 2013/14 to 2019/20'.
