Details

This guidance explains the rule in the Equality Act 2010 that allows a charity to discriminate by limiting the group of people it helps. This is called the ‘charities’ exception’.

It includes:

  • how the charities’ exception applies in different circumstances
  • illustrative examples
  • how other Act exceptions apply to some charities

The guidance is aimed at trustees of existing charities and of organisations applying to register.
