Details

This prison service instruction (PSI) explains when and how prison staff should request information on the barred status of offenders from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). This is used to decide whether a prisoner can be allowed to work with children or vulnerable adults.

It includes guidance on:

  • the role of the DBS
  • criteria for requesting information on a prisoner
  • the barred status and what it means

It also explains changes to disqualification orders, which were used before the DBS was set up.

This is a current PSI. It came into effect on 3 February 2014 and was last updated on 5 October 2015.
