Commercial electric vans and fleets: adoption, smart charging and barriers
Social research into electric vehicle (EV) adoption and smart charging for vans and commercial fleets: driving and charging patterns, and barriers to uptake.

Details
There is little documented evidence on the driving and charging patterns of van fleets, and the barriers to uptake of electric vans and smart charging, although vans accounted for 16% of all UK transport CO2 emissions in 2020 (DfT Transport and environment statistics 2022).
This research explores the:
- driving and charging patterns of commercial van fleets
- barriers commercial fleet operators and drivers face in adopting electric vans, and potential solutions
- barriers commercial van fleet operators and drivers face in installing and using smart charging technologies and potential solutions
DESNZ commissioned TRL Ltd to carry out this research. DESNZ, DfT and the Office for Zero Emission Vehicle (OZEV) reviewed the findings which are being used to inform policy development.
The research was completed prior to the recent UK general election in July 2024. As such, any references to government policies, commitments, or initiatives may reflect the stance of the previous administration, and were accurate at the time of fieldwork and writing.
