These 2 qualitative research projects aimed to understand:

  • how people feel about returning to public transport, aviation and maritime modes of travel during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic
  • what policy and communication measures could reassure users across all travel modes

1. The aviation and maritime transport research took place between 3 and 22 June 2020. This included:

  • 4 focus groups with regular flyers
  • 2 focus groups with regular ferry users
  • 3 in-depth interviews with ferry commuters

This ‘Confidence using aviation and maritime transport in June 2020’ research was undertaken by Ipsos MORI on behalf of the Department for Transport (DfT).

2. The research about confidence in using public transport was conducted in 3 different stages with:

  • the general travelling public: 4 focus groups between 23 June and 2 July 2020
  • people with disabilities: 10 in-depth interviews between 13 and 24 August 2020
  • people with anxiety conditions: 10 in-depth interviews between 3 and 20 August 2020

This ‘Public transport confidence – summer 2020’ report and ‘technical appendix’ were undertaken by Ipsos MORI and TRL on behalf of DfT.
