This analysis was commissioned by the Race Disparity Unit following the publication of the PHE report COVID-19: review of disparities in risks and outcomes

The aim of this PHE analysis is to provide further evidence of the role of pre-existing health conditions in ethnic inequalities in diagnosis, deaths and survival from coronavirus (COVID-19). In particular, the objectives were to:

  • describe COVID-19 diagnoses and deaths by ethnicity and pre-existing health conditions
  • compare the number of cases and deaths from COVID-19 by ethnic group among people with pre-existing conditions to determine whether ethnic differences exist among people with similar pre-existing conditions
  • compare survival following COVID-19 diagnosis by ethnic group, adjusting for age, sex, socioeconomic characteristics and pre-existing conditions, to determine the extent to which pre-existing conditions explain differences in survival between ethnic groups
