Despite progress over many years, the gender pay gap (the difference between in average earnings between male and female employees) in the UK is still high by international standards. This is partly because many low-paid jobs, in areas such as secretarial work and childcare, are still done by women. Women are also much more likely than men to work part-time and to occupy less senior positions than men.

Greater transparency about these issues is the best way to address them, which is why the Department publishes its gender pay gap as well as other workforce data. Find out more about what government is doing to encourage transparency about gender pay.
