1. Our mission
‘DFTDC is the Centre of Excellence for provision of basic and further training for Royal Air Force, Ministry of Defence and contractor firefighters, through the provision of training courses offering the highest quality of firefighter training to meet our customer’s demands in addition to firefighter training and awareness to the wider defence community’.
The Defence Fire Training and Development Centre (DFTDC) at Manston is situated in Kent close to the town of Ramsgate and carries out fire training to the Royal Air Force (RAF), Ministry of Defence (MOD) and Contractor firefighters.
In turn, DFTDC is now governed by HQ Land Command, through the Defence Fire Risk Management Organisation (DFRMO) at Andover, with regional control vested in 11 Brigade at Aldershot.

2. Commercial activities
DFTDC Manston is able to offer spare capacity on a diverse range of facilities that often becomes available due to the fluctuation in training courses that are run.
Private and public sector organisations as well as private individuals, at reasonable rates, can apply to lease or use, on a casual basis, facilities ranging from the fire training areas including simulators, classrooms, conference facilities, 100 seat lecture theatre, storage facilities and some sleeping accommodation.
Facilities for the testing of fire service equipment such as; fire-fighting media, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), hydraulic lifting/cutting equipment and thermal imaging cameras are also available.

3. All Arms Unit fire safety courses
A suite of courses has been endorsed between the DFRMO and CD CSS which consist of 4 separate modules. The 4 separate course modules are as follows:
3.1 Unit fire safety manager (UFSM) (Non specialist) course
The UFSM course aims to train military and civilian staff (rank range Sgt to Maj and equivalent) ion the day to day management of Unit fire safety. The course is 2 1/2 days in duration commencing on a Tuesday and dispersing on Thursday (lunchtime). This course provides no operational fire-fighter training.
3.2 Unit fire safety warden (UFSW) (Non specialist) course
This course covers the day-to-day activities and the practical elements of fire safety. The course is 2 day in duration commencing on a Tuesday and dispersing on Wednesday. The UFSW training course covers basic fire safety duties.
3.3 DFRMO Extinguisher maintainer course (DEMC)
This course is designed to provide Delegates with the Skills and Knowledge to carry out the duties of a Fire Extinguishers Maintainer. The Extinguisher Maintenance course is 3 days in duration commencing on a Tuesday and dispersing on Thursday.
3.4 Unit fire safety awareness trainer (UFSAT) (Non specialist) course
This course is designed to provide Delegates with the functional competencies to carry out the duties of a Unit Fire Safety Awareness Trainer. The course is 1 3/4 days in duration commencing on a Tuesday and dispersing on Wednesday.
