DfT SME champion: roles and responsibilities

Robert Vaughan is the Department for Transport’s small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) champion. His role sits within DfT’s Group Commercial Directorate. This is an overview of his role and responsibilities.
Robert is responsible for implementing the SME action plan, aimed at ensuring 33% of procurement spend will be with SMEs by 2022, either directly or indirectly through the supply chain.
The main items in the SME action plan are to:
- enhance DfT direct and indirect spend with SMEs
- ensure policies supporting the SME agenda are consistent and adhered to across the DfT
- use spend information and pipeline data to identify specific industries and locations to continuously increase engagement and spend with SMEs
- increase collaboration between the DfT and key stakeholders to share good working practices and eliminate barriers to SME take-up
