Import of wool grease or fatty substances derived therefrom (including lanolin and lanolin alcohol) - Import Information Note (IIN) ABP/37

1. General information 

This Import Information Note (IIN) must be read in conjunction with the IIN for general information for imports of animal by-products (ABPs), which provides information on pre-notifications, veterinary checks, risk categories and more.

2. Scope 

This IIN covers the importation of wool grease or fatty substances derived therefrom (including lanolin and lanolin alcohol) for technical and manufacturing purposes other than the use in food, feed material, organic fertilisers or soil improvers. 

For derived products from wool grease which have been processed and no longer require further processing (other than mixing, coating, assembling or packaging to make it suitable for placing on the market) and are intended for the manufacture of cosmetic products, the requirements for intermediate products apply (see IIN ABP/20).  

3. Country of origin 

The wool grease or fatty substances derived therefrom (including lanolin and lanolin alcohol) can be imported from any country. 

4. Documentation 

Consignments must be accompanied by a commercial document, produced and signed by the manufacturer or consignor of the product stating at least the following information: 

  • name and address of consignor
  • name and address of consignee
  • country of origin
  • description of product, weight, amount
  • purpose of the import  

5. Packaging 

The product must be securely packaged in clean, leak-proof containers. 

6. Labelling requirements 

The outer packaging must bear labels indicating “NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION”. 

7. Movement to premises of destination 

Once checked at the BCP the wool grease or fatty substances derived therefrom (including lanolin and lanolin alcohol) must be transported directly to an establishment or plant which has been registered or approved depending on the purposes of the establishment or plant in accordance with Article 23 or Article 24 of  Regulation (EC) 1069/2009
