Details

Farm animals depend on humans for their care, making them vulnerable to disasters and emergencies. There are national contingency plans for outbreaks of disease but not for protecting farm animal welfare in other types of emergencies.

Planning at all levels for disasters and emergencies should take into account the potential hazards to farm animal welfare. Protection of animal welfare is primarily the responsibility of the individual animal keeper but there is a place for local networks of support as well as national planning for emergency response to major events.
