Details

This safety study was prompted by the results of a research project on fatal accident rates for the UK workforce published in 2007. The project had highlighted the dangers of working in the fishing industry. MAIB, covering a 14-year period and relating to the deaths of 256 commerical fisherman operating on UK-registered vessels, analysed its database and investigation reports.

The aim was to:

  • identify causal and contributing factors
  • draw conclusions
  • make recommendations

The document includes contributions from all sectors of the fishing industry and focuses on future safety.

One outcome of this study was the production of an Advisory Note: Potting Safety, (PDF, 488.74KB) produced by Seafish to summarise the available information on potting related incidents and provides guidance on safe practices.
