Details

‘Fuller Working Lives: a framework for action’ explains how working longer can benefit individuals, businesses, society and the economy. It sets out a number of new actions we will take to help people have fuller working lives.

This is not simply about people working after State Pension age, though some individuals may want to and this may be right for them. We want to stop people leaving the labour market involuntarily in their 50s and early 60s. This can be catastrophic for an individual’s retirement finances and can also negatively affect their wider health and wellbeing.

The framework covers the main groups affected:

  • carers
  • disabled people and those with health conditions
  • people who are made redundant

It also considers how skills, workplace factors, financial security and incentives can help people stay in work longer.

We have published statistical evidence that gives background to this publication.

More information about helping people work longer

We have published guidance about employing older workers and working past 50. This includes the ‘Employer toolkit: guidance for managers of older workers’, produced in partnership with the Age Action Alliance, that covers all business sectors. The toolkit is available as an interactive version and to download as a PDF.

Our Age Positive initiative brings together research and information from employers on effectively managing an ageing workforce. Download and use this information freely in you communications.
