Details

Sustainable procurement is the process whereby organisations meet their needs for goods, services, works and utilities in a way that benefits not only the organisation, but also society and the economy - while minimising damage to the environment.

The Government Buying Standards (GBS) are a set of sustainable specifications for a range of commonly purchased products and are designed to make it easier for government departments to buy sustainably. The standards have been endorsed by the government and all central government departments and their related organisations must ensure they meet the minimum mandatory specifications when buying appropriate products and services.

These standards are recognised across government as an important tool in delivering sustainable procurement and can demonstrate progress towards the Greening Government Commitments (GGC) targets.

The GGC targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions, waste and water use, as well as buying more sustainably, affect every aspect of government operations, and the breadth of the government estate means this has a far-reaching effect.

This report shows how DWP and its suppliers are responding to the GGC.
