Details

The Government Chemist Annual Review provides highlights from the referee cases, advisory work and capability building activities completed in the year as well as focused articles on emerging challenges. The main topics included in this Review are:

  • Referee cases, which have covered a range of topics and have been of increased complexity. Cases include the analysis of food for genetically modified organisms, allergens, pesticides and mycotoxins. There have also been cases related to choking hazards (jelly mini-cups) and food contact materials, which were analysed for the presence of primary aromatic amines (PAAs)

  • Advisory role: overview of the activities associated with the advisory role, including responding to enquiries from stakeholders and to consultations from national and international organisations

  • Capability building: the Government Chemist team worked on being ready for future challenges by completing projects which develop and maintain molecular biology approaches for food analysis and mass spectrometry approaches for allergenic protein testing

  • Focus on future challenges: current issues in food contact materials testing and future challenges

  • Impact of the Government Chemist work: including stakeholder engagement and knowledge transfer activities.
