The Government Chemist programme is delivered as part of the National Measurement System programme portfolio overseen by the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology.

The Government Chemist strategy for the period of 2023-2026 supports the vision of the Government Chemist programme. Informed by horizon scanning activities, the current regulatory framework, government food strategies and a stakeholder workshop conducted in June 2022, the Government Chemist Strategy focuses on four strategic aims:

  • Protecting consumers in increasingly challenging times
  • Supporting business and government across the four nations of the UK
  • Collaboratively building a resilient national skills base
  • Maximising UK measurement expertise to address global challenges

This strategy will support the long-standing aims of the Government Chemist programme in supporting consumer protection and providing independent and impartial advice for both Government and the wider analytical community. It places greater emphasis on plans to enhance cross-government working across the UK infrastructure. It aims to demonstrate international leadership in matters relating to measurement science, helping to address global challenges.
