On 27 October 2011 the House of Commons Justice Committee published its Ninth Report of the 2010-12 session, ‘Referral fees and the theft of personal data’.

The report contained four recommendations for the Ministry of Justice concerning: penalties for section 55 offences under the Data Protection Act 1998, banning referral fees in personal injury cases, the inspection powers of the Information Commissioner, and the funding of the Information Commissioner.

This is the Government response to each of these recommendations.
