It is nearly 2 years since we saw shocking acts of opportunistic criminality and vandalism which ruined local businesses, shattered streets and made people feel unsafe in their own homes. Following the riots, the government and opposition set up the independent Riots Communities and Victims Panel to explore the causes of the riots and how communities can be made more socially and economically resilient, in order to prevent future disorder.

The government values the panel’s work and welcomed the final report (PDF, 4.85MB published in March 2012 which highlighted key issues the panel believes are important to help build social and economic resilience within communities.

This document provides that, summarising what the government has done to provide support to those affected by the riots and the actions that the government is taking forward to address some of the more entrenched issues highlighted in the panel’s report.
