Communication is an essential and necessary part of making sure research informs development policy and practice.

FCDO expects all directly supported research programmes to include a Communications Strategy and to allocate at least 10% of research programme funding to communications.

This note gives a set of ‘10 Guiding Principles’ providing the basic components of effective, strategic communication. Guidance is also given on the expertise and authority expected of communications staff . Lists of useful websites and publications on communications are included.
