Details
West Nile virus (WNV) infections have long been recognised in Europe where there is annual surveillance for human and equine disease. There is no evidence that WNV is present in the UK and very few travel-related cases have been reported to date. Populations of competent mosquitoes (Culex modestus) - capable of transmitting the virus - have, however, been detected in areas of southern England.
