The government is committed to increasing the transparency of the work of its intelligence, security and law enforcement agencies. That is why it has committed to produce an annual government transparency report.
The report means the public will be able to access for the first time, and in one place, a guide to:
- a range of powers used to combat threats to national security
- the extent of their use
- the safeguards and oversight in place to guard against their abuse
It shows that, while these powers are crucial for the protection of the public, they are only used when necessary and proportionate to do so. The report builds on the government’s strong track record of enhancing transparency. This includes giving additional resources to the intelligence commissioners and the giving of greater powers to the intelligence and security committee of Parliament.
