This response explains the decision to safeguard Phase 2a of the HS2 route between the West Midlands and Crewe, taking consultation responses into account. An impact assessment on safeguarding Phase 2a of the route has also been published.

Background on safeguarding HS2 Phase 2a

Between 4 November 2014 and 6 January 2015, the government consulted on a proposal to safeguard land that may be needed for a section of the HS2 Phase Two route. The section, referred to as Phase 2a, is between Fradley and Crewe.

High Speed Two Limited conducted the 9-week consultation on behalf of the Department for Transport (DfT). It sought views from all interested parties. This included relevant local planning authorities and stakeholders and qualifying owner-occupiers who would fall within the areas identified in the draft safeguarding directions and maps.

In line with the government’s consultation principles, the consultation was also open to responses from the public more generally.
