This is an independent review of Radioactive Waste Management’s National Screening Guidance. This review has been carried out by the Independent Review Panel, set up by the Geological Society in response to the Implementing Geological Disposal White Paper, published in 2014.

The role of the Independent Review Panel is to review the draft National Geological Screening Guidance, produced by Radioactive Waste Management.

The National Screening Guidance is one of the initial actions which the Government set out in the 2014 White Paper. There are three initial actions in total which together form the policy framework for the future implementation of geological disposal in the UK.

The Panel met on five occasions in 2015 and 2016 and provided comments on the draft guidance.

In their review of the final guidance, the panel state “The present guidance is sound technically and it can be applied at a high level using existing and appropriate geological information; it therefore provides a basis for assessing the prospects for a GDF safety case in the relevant geological settings
