Details

This report is intended for those working in local authorities, the NHS and voluntary sector fields.

It considers the variation in infant mortality across the West Midlands region, and considers some of the potential infant mortality risk factors including:

  • low birth weight
  • smoking at the time of pregnancy
  • teenage pregnancy (under 16’s and under 18’s)
  • breastfeeding initiation
  • children in poverty

Although there have been some improvements in infant and perinatal mortality in the West Midlands, there remain unacceptable variation and health inequalities across local authorities. This report provides a focus on local areas, providing data and information to further support local organisations to tackle these differences in outcomes. The health inequalities focus describes the differences across the West Midlands and in social and ethnic groups.
