All departments are required to provide contact details so that members of the public can request information about how the government is holding their personal data.

The Data Handling Review requires government departments to issue an information charter. This should set out:
- the standards that people can expect from the public body when it requests or holds their personal information
- how they can get access to their personal data
- what they can do if they do not think that standards are being met
The guidance gives a template for what an information charter should cover. Departments must identify who the citizen can contact to request further information about the management of their data.
