Published 12 August 2024

About the Special Report

The Special Report on Climate Change and Cities will provide a timely assessment of the latest science related to climate change and cities, including climate impacts and risks, and actions that can be taken to minimise them.

The outline of the Special Report agreed by the Panel at its Sixty-first Session (Sofia, Bulgaria, 27 July to 2 August 2024) is available at: Decision IPCC-LXI-5.

Nomination process

All IPCC member governments, including the United Kingdom, have been invited to nominate experts for consideration as Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors, and Review Editors the Special Report.  The IPCC Bureau will then select the final author team to produce the report from these nominations. The composition of the group of Coordinating Lead Authors and Lead Authors for each chapter shall aim to reflect:

  • the range of scientific, technical and socio-economic views and expertise, including experts from academia and practitioners and policymakers
  • geographic representation (ensuring appropriate representation of experts from developing and developed countries and countries with economies in transition)
  • a mixture of experts with and without previous experience in IPCC
  • gender balance

The UK is committed to diversity and inclusion in the IPCC process. We encourage and value the nomination of experts from groups, including, but not limited to, women and non-binary people, the LGBTQ+ community, ethnic minorities, and people with disabilities. We welcome all applications from experts currently affiliated with UK institutions and ask that experts based outside the UK contact the National Focal Point of their host country in the first instance. National Focal Points are listed on the IPCC website at: https://www.ipcc.ch/apps/contact/interface/focalpoints.php.
